Learning a new language is often begun at a young age and, in some schools,  is continued throughout a person’s education. While it may be easier to learn  and retain a second language at a younger age, those who are interested in  learning a second language later on in life should not be discouraged. In fact,  the older a person gets, the more apparent the need for the English language  becomes. Consider the following instances in which mastery of the English  language is crucial for success.

  1. Obtaining a job in an English speaking country, or having to frequently  interact with English speaking colleagues overseas. With trading between  countries is at a high, people are expected to speak more than one language in  order to ensure the completion of a transaction. This means that English as a  second language is becoming more common and expected in the business  community.

Anyone moving to a country that is predominantly English speaking will need  to master the English language to complete daily tasks and communicate with  others on a daily basis. Without having knowledge of the English language it may  be very frustrating to complete simple tasks and interact with others.

For parents new to an English speaking country, learning English will not  only benefit the parent, but children as well. When children are exposed to  English in an academic environment, they typically bounce back between speaking  a primary language at home and English in school. When parents commit to  learning English as a second language it provides a bonding experience between  the parent and English speaking child, and makes communicating with the child’s  school much easier.

There are a number of reasons why a person would want to learn English as a  second language, each reason is individual, and will provide countless benefits  in future communications. As with any type of learning, it is important to find  a learning methodology that works best for you, and that is easy to access. With  this in mind, there are many  English as a second language courses I can offer  that provide a positive environment for learning English. By taking advantage of my courses , it is possible to quickly and effectively master the  English language.

English is the international language of business and culture in our day, and  without a good command of its grammar and structure, it is hard to succeed in  the world. Understanding spoken English is not enough; we must also be able to  read and write it to fully understand the language. Practice makes perfect, and  if we do not take time to review important English concepts, we can make  mistakes that have significant consequences.

Consider English punctuation, for example. Lynne Truss, in her famous book Eats Shoots & Leaves makes the point that the proper punctuation  can be the difference between life and death. The panda that eats shoots and  leaves is never to be feared, but the panda that eats, shoots and leaves may  kill you with his shotgun. Inserting a comma after the word eats in  that phrase introduces a pause that turns the panda into a killer!

Proper English spelling is also vital for accurate communication. The words there and their may sound the same and may be spelled  similarly, but they mean different things. There is an adverb that answers the  question where? and their is the plural possessive of the pronoun they. You  would not put your coat over their and the teachers would never instruct there  students.

Practicing English can seem burdensome, but there are ways to make it  easy and fun. This is what I make every endeavour to do when teaching English to my students.

Good luck with your English language learning.
